Team Tiger’s 2026 build-up has hit its first proper pothole — and it wasn’t even on the course.
Jon Mackness has ruptured a knee ligament after falling down a step at Wells Golf Club, leaving him in a knee brace and fighting to be ready for Day 1 in Vilamoura (18–21 May).
The timing couldn’t be worse: Mackness is set for his tour debut, and the storyline was already spicy with his partner Cath Levell lining up for Team Spider on the opposite side of the rivalry. Now it’s turned into a full-blown “will he / won’t he” fitness drama — with Tiger hoping for a miracle recovery and Spider allegedly “sending thoughts and prayers” through uncontrollable laughter.
A Team Tiger spokesperson said Mackness is “doing everything possible to be fit,” while insiders confirmed he has already promised he’ll “play through it” — a statement medical professionals usually translate as: he’s going to try something stupid on the 1st tee.
